MEMBERS WORK: PICTURING THE NORTH

In June 2020, PHA Qld member Timothy Roberts delivered a presentation to the Queensland State Archives on artistic representations connected to Queensland before 1859. The lecture illustrates some highlights of early art in Queensland, emphasising the themes of exploration, establishment, and edification. This visual journey through Queensland’s history begins with artists who were inspired to create work during successive waves of exploration along the Queensland coast; followed by visual representations of the communities that emerged throughout the early decades of settlement. The presentation concludes with a selection of works of art which evidence individual achievement in the young colony.
